USB, Audio & Waterfall Setup Guide

The FT-710 exposes CAT control, USB audio and its spectrum interface as separate Windows devices. One part can work while another does not, so this guide checks each path in a clear order.

01 · Preparation

Before you start

  1. Install the current version of 710 Console and leave the driver option selected during setup.
  2. Restart Windows after the drivers are installed.
  3. Switch the FT-710 fully off, unplug its USB cable for 10 seconds, reconnect it, then switch the radio on.
  4. Open 710 Console and connect to the radio before testing audio or the waterfall.

CAT, audio and spectrum are separate. A working CAT connection proves the serial path is working; it does not prove that Windows can see the audio or FT4222 spectrum devices.

02 · Hardware

Use a reliable USB connection

Connect the FT-710 directly to the PC with a good-quality, reasonably short USB A-to-B “printer” cable where possible.

  • Avoid hubs, docks and long extension cables while troubleshooting.
  • Try a different USB port and cable before changing lots of software settings.
  • After moving the cable, power-cycle the radio so Windows can discover all of its USB functions again.

The radio's CAT, audio and spectrum functions share the physical USB connection. A marginal cable or hub can affect only one of them, which can make the fault look like an app setting.

03 · Windows

Set the FT-710 audio devices to 48 kHz

Repeat this for the FT-710 USB playback and recording devices:

Settings → System → Sound → select the device → Properties

Choose a format that uses 16 bit, 48000 Hz. Windows may show two channels for playback and one channel for recording; that difference is normal. The important setting is 48000 Hz.

Turn off audio processing while testing

For the FT-710 USB audio devices, initially turn off options such as Audio enhancements, Voice Clarity and Voice Focus. You can also disable processing on the PC microphone while establishing a clean baseline, then experiment later if you prefer its sound.

Stop Windows changing levels

Settings → System → Sound → More sound settings → Communications → Do nothing

This prevents Windows from lowering other audio when it thinks a communications device is active.

04 · Audio tab

Select the four audio devices

Important: both Radio USB fields must use USB Audio Device.
Radio USB input (RX)Microphone (USB Audio Device)
Radio USB output (TX)Speakers (USB Audio Device)
If either Radio USB field is set to a Realtek, headset, monitor or other PC device, radio audio will not be routed correctly.

Transmit pathPC microphone → 710 Console → FT-710
710 Console fieldChoose
MicrophoneYour real PC, headset or USB microphone
Speakers / headphonesThe PC output you want to listen through
Radio USB input (RX)Microphone (USB Audio Device)
Radio USB output (TX)Speakers (USB Audio Device)

Windows may add a number to duplicate names, such as Speakers (2- USB Audio Device). That is normal: select the numbered USB Audio Device belonging to the FT-710. The two fields without “Radio USB” are different: Microphone is your real PC microphone, and Speakers / headphones is where you listen.

05 · Routing

PC microphone and listening controls

PC microphone

When PC microphone is on, 710 Console routes the selected computer microphone to the FT-710 over USB. Turn it off when you want to transmit with the physical FT-710 hand microphone.

The hand microphone PTT can still key the radio while PC microphone routing is on, but the selected computer microphone is then the transmit-audio source.

Listen on radio

  • Off: receive audio is routed to the selected PC speakers or headphones.
  • On: receive audio stays at the radio and is heard from the radio's own speaker or connected radio headphones.
06 · Spectrum

If the waterfall is missing

  1. Make sure the FT-710 is on, connected in 710 Console and running the latest app version.
  2. On the radio, check MENU → OPERATION SETTING → GENERAL → SCU-LAN10 is ON. Current versions normally enable this when they connect.
  3. In 710 Console, open Help → Scope check….
  4. SC00 means the scope path is working. For any other code, follow the action shown in the check window.
  5. If offered, use Reinstall drivers or Restart scope and follow the prompts.

If Windows has lost the FT4222 interface completely, close 710 Console, switch the radio off, unplug USB for 10–30 seconds, reconnect it, switch the radio on and reopen the app.

USB Serial Port / Code 28

An unused USB Serial Port entry may show Code 28 in Device Manager. 710 Console does not use that extra virtual serial port. If FT4222 Interface A and FT4222 Interface B are present, the unused serial-port entry does not by itself mean the scope driver has failed.

07 · Display

Scope and waterfall controls

SpanChanges the frequency width shown around the tuned area.
AveragingSmooths short-term movement by combining display frames.
ContrastChanges how strongly waterfall colours separate weak and strong signals.
LevelAdjusts the radio scope reference level so the noise floor sits sensibly.
Waterfall speedChanges how quickly new waterfall rows move down the display.
PeakControls peak indication on the spectrum trace.
30 / 60 FPSLimits presentation refresh rate; it does not make the radio deliver scope frames faster.
GridShows or hides the spectrum reference grid.
AxisShows or hides the frequency ruler.
FillShows or hides the area fill beneath the spectrum trace.
ShadowsShows or hides display glow and depth effects.
08 · Recovery

If audio disappears after PTT

Windows can occasionally reset or temporarily remove a USB audio endpoint. Work through these steps in order:

  1. Switch Listen on radio on, then off, to reopen the PC receive-audio path.
  2. Open Help → Audio check… and review which endpoints 710 Console can see.
  3. Disconnect and reconnect the radio in 710 Console.
  4. Remove any USB hub or extension and try another port or cable.
  5. Recheck the 48 kHz formats and disabled audio enhancements in Windows.
  6. If the device is still missing, close the app and power-cycle the radio and USB connection.

If the problem continues, copy the Audio check report and include it in a bug report.
