Getting started with 710 Console

Follow the Setup Assistant in order. CAT, spectrum and audio are separate Windows devices, so each page confirms one path before moving on.

Download and install

  1. Download the installer only from 710console.co.uk.
  2. Run Setup. Windows SmartScreen may warn because the beta installer is not yet code-signed.
  3. Leave driver installation selected. Setup includes the signed Silicon Labs CP210x CAT driver and FTDI D2XX spectrum driver; USB audio uses Windows' built-in driver.
  4. Restart Windows if Setup asks.

Requirements: Yaesu FT-710, 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 and the radio's USB cable.

Connect the FT-710

Use a good-quality, reasonably short USB A-to-B “printer” cable. Connect directly to the PC while testing; remove hubs, docks and long extensions.

  1. Close 710 Console.
  2. Switch the radio fully off.
  3. Connect USB, wait about ten seconds, then switch the radio on.
  4. Open 710 Console.

Follow the Setup Assistant

Radio

Select the FT-710 Enhanced COM port. This is the normal CAT port. Choose the radio's configured CAT baud; current builds validate a real response and can safely detect the working rate if the saved rate does not answer.

Spectrum

Confirms Windows can see the separate FT4222 interface and receive the radio's scope data.

Audio

Choose your normal PC microphone and speakers, then set Radio USB input (RX) to Microphone (USB Audio Device) and Radio USB output (TX) to Speakers (USB Audio Device).

Test

Checks CAT, scope and receive audio. The microphone-level test does not key the transmitter.

Do not miss this audio step: both fields whose labels begin Radio USB must point to the FT-710's USB Audio Device, not to Realtek, a headset, a monitor or another PC audio device.

Enhanced COM is CAT. The separate Standard COM port is used only for keyboard CW/DTR keying. Do not select Standard COM as the normal CAT port.

How to recognise a successful setup

  • The app shows the FT-710 as connected and identifies a real radio response.
  • VFO A/B show frequency and mode instead of remaining blank.
  • Changing frequency or mode is reflected by both the app and radio.
  • The spectrum/waterfall moves while the radio is connected.
  • The Audio page detects both radio USB endpoints and receive audio reaches the selected output.
  • The Setup Assistant Test page reports each path as available.
CAT support

If CAT does not work

Blank VFO or no frequency

Open the connection settings and confirm the Enhanced COM port. Disconnect other radio software temporarily: only one program can normally own a physical COM port.

Connected status but controls do not respond

Current production builds validate a real FT-710 ID response before reporting CAT as connected. Disconnect and reconnect, then rerun Setup if the VFO remains blank or values do not read back.

Baud-rate problem

Use the FT-710's configured CAT rate. It is not fixed at 38400. If the saved rate does not answer, current builds can test supported rates without changing the radio and remember the working value.

Port in use

Close WSJT-X, logging applications, serial terminals and any earlier 710 Console process that may have opened the Enhanced COM port. CAT sharing/virtual COM is not currently released.

After radio or USB power changes

Disconnect in 710 Console, power-cycle the radio and reconnect USB. If Windows assigns a different COM number, rerun Setup and select the newly listed Enhanced COM port.

CAT, scope and audio fail independently. Working CAT does not prove that the FT4222 spectrum device or USB audio endpoints are working.

Drivers & recovery

If only part of USB works

  • CAT only: run Help → Scope check… for the separate FT4222 path.
  • No CAT: check Enhanced COM, baud and port ownership.
  • No audio: open Help → Audio check… and use the USB/audio guide.
  • Intermittent devices: remove hubs/extensions, try another cable and USB port, then power-cycle the radio.
